Middle School

The Third Plane of Development

Thank you for taking the time to learn more about Harbor Montessori School’s Middle School Program, which is based on Dr. Montessori’s child studies. Dr. Montessori concluded that there are four planes of development that children pass through on their way to adulthood. Middle School students are entering the third plane of development, which spans from age 12 to 18. Harbor Montessori School’s Middle School program is based on the developmental needs of children in the third plane of development. Those needs are:

  • Trust
  • Self-Expression
  • Analytical Thought (Academic Rigor)
  • Commitment
  • Responsibility

The Middle School years also are a time of significant physiological changes, which often cause confusion and frustration. Students of this age find strenuous physical activity helps them deal with their changing bodies as well as provide opportunities for teamwork/group cooperation. Students also gain a sense of personal satisfaction as they accomplish work, which leads to a strong work ethic. It should also be noted that this is the age when children are very interested in finding their place in the world, both personally and vocationally.
