The Robots Are Coming, The Robots Are Coming!
Does your child like robotics, design elements, or computer programming? Well then, Harbor Montessori School is the place to be, as we are starting a Robotics Team. Alumni student, Parker Olive, who just placed 24th out of 84 teams at the World Robotics Championship in his first year of competition, will be mentoring an HMS team starting in September. Students can participate if they are ages 9-14. Parker will be visiting HMS on May 28th to give a demonstration. If students are interested in participating, their parent needs to complete an interest form and give it to Sonya Cary by June 4. The team will hold its meetings afterschool and on some weekends at HMS. An information meeting for all interested students and their parents will be held at 6:00 pm on Monday, June 21 at HMS.

Why HMS & Private Schools Are Good for America
Did you know that in America:
•One in four schools is a private school;
•One child in nine attends a private school;
•Private schools produce an annual savings to taxpayers estimated at more than $48,000,000,000;
•Private school students perform better than their public school counterparts on standardized achievement tests;
•Ninety percent of private high school graduates attend college, compared to 66 percent of public high school graduates;
•Private school students from low socio-economic backgrounds are more than three times more likely than comparable public school students to attain a bachelor’s degree by their mid-20s, meaning that private schools contribute to breaking the cycle of poverty for their students;
•Private schools are racially, ethnically, and economically diverse. Twenty-three percent of private school students are students of color; 28 percent are from families with annual incomes under $50,000;
•Private secondary school students are nearly 50 percent more likely to take Advanced Placement or IB courses in science and math than public school students;
•The participation of private school students in community service projects is significantly higher than their public school counterparts.

HMS Hawk Squawk Goes Live
One of the goals at Harbor Montessori is to insure that students know how to use technology as a tool. While you may not have considered blogging as a tool, Mrs. Jenna Elledge, HMS Middle School teacher, has the new HawkSquawk hard at work. In lieu of a traditional literature circle this cycle, the middle school students are responding to questions on a blog that Mrs. Elledge created. The students are reading Animal Farm this cycle (traditionally a high school selection). You can log on and see the Blog design that the students helped create, view their responses and even give a response of your own. Make sure to check out www.hmshawksquawk.blogspot.com. Many thanks go to Mrs. Elledge for creating a project that the students find so engaging.

HMS Auction Makes Wishes Come True
Harbor Montessori's auction, "Wish Upon a Star", which was held on March 13 at Canterwood Golf & Country Club, showed that wishes do come true. The auction raised over $55,000 for the students of Harbor Montessori. On behalf of the students and staff of Harbor Montessori, we would like to thank the Auction committee and the donors for making such a successful auction possible. Special thanks go to co-chairs Emilie Marchio and Rachel Barth. There are a number of other committee members who deserve special recognition, including Michele Giesy for sponsoring the parent gifts, Justin and Carys Bice for the displays, Carmen Mcnamer for the program printing, Amy Cleave for her beautiful artwork, Dean & Kris Barker for sponsoring the dessert dash, the HMS Board of Directors for sponsoring the teacher's table, Elaine Pupo and Maren Wall for the children's projects and Jeanne Peterson and Jill Greene (alumni parents) for managing the banking. The auction proceeds will allow Harbor Montessori School to maintain and improve our programs for toddlers through ninth grade. Thank you to all who participated!
